API architecture
API architectures define how APIs are structured and how they handle requests and responses. The most common architectures are:
REST (Representational State Transfer): They Follow REST (Representational State Transfer) principles. They are commonly used and easy to understand.
- Use standard HTTP methods (GET, POST, PUT, DELETE)
- Stateless communication
- Resources are accessed via URLs
SOAP (Simple Object Access Protocol): Use XML for communication, often used in enterprise environments.
- Use XML for message format
- Can work with different protocols (HTTP, SMTP, etc.)
- More rigid structure compared to REST
GraphQL: Allow clients to request only the data they need, improving efficiency.
- Allow clients to request specific data
- Single endpoint for all queries
- Strongly typed schema
Webhooks: Event-driven APIs that send data when a specific event occurs.
